Birthday

Had one of the best birthday's ever. "Jumped" in the new year at the beach with full moon (cheesy) and a superb scenery.

After a nice breakfast and lecs we had to use the good weather (it was raining the day before and also teh day after..) and went to the beach again.

After good Mexican food and Chinese songs

I was suprised by a sounding Happy Birthday on a bagpipe (really cool, I love bagpipes).

And then I stood back home, people came and amazingly most of the bunch left shortly again for some dubious reasons: "Sorry Felix, I have to take a shower now, come over after"/ " I do my laundry and come over then"/"Have to call my parents, cu later"/.... .
So, there I was, lost and nearly alone.
But then they came with the scarf and I had to walk around Hillhead.
After smelling the the Watering Hole I feared the worst but we went trough and in another room.

SURPRISE

Most of my guest hanged around there and all the people with the dubious reasons sat there.. I had to sit and then we played the "Who wants to be Felix Becker" game. Questins like, what's Felix most favourite expression, how does he charm girls, what's his favourite food (not, its not instant noodles), how does a typical Aberdeen night out look like and so on...... (not giving any of the answers here...). Got my presentes after each couple of questions and sat there on the chair kinda lost.

After that the whole bunch went back to my flat and the party started where I got Happy Birthday sung in a couple of languages.
Thank you folks and the "organising" team for a really nice birthday, enjoyed my day very much. Cheers!!!

Dolphin

Did a short daytrip by car up to Peterhead. And the most important thing was that we saw a dolphin. Juhu....

Highland Games

Caro, Ida and Dona prepared a georgeous game in the forest (Thank you girls), the famous Highland Games. Ran around, played kinda hide & seek, had flour wars, built pyrmaides, jumped around and did lots od stuff you only would expect small chaps to do. Anyway, besides minor bruises and totally dirty clothes we had a great time, especially after we've found the treasure. Cheers.

Scottish weather

The weather was Scottish, so lots of rain but also sun, was changing all the day.

They just love the English

Marie and the "hippo" For those who haven't watched "Along came Polly", watch it wait for Claude For those who have:(Please rrrread with Frrrrench Accent) A hippo cannot put a stripe and become a zebra or put a spot and become a leopard – it will always remain a hippo – accept the fact and enjoy life

We tried them, but we didn't buy them in the end... But the two girls had fun in the shop.....

A fierce fight in the souveniershop

Hill Climbing & Posing

Went up the hill, but they girls have been to slow...
..so we had to drag them

The castle and us

Unbelievable, the sun. So we used it.....

Butterfly & Insect World

Someone seemed to be really afraid of
wonderful Butterflies which were flying all over the place
..little Rosie (but the Rosies & her friends were kept in cages....)
..and finally small ants. Amazing what they can carry!

ARGGGGG!!!

Unbelievable!!

Just send a fax back home, excerpts:

Felix: Can you please send that fax for me
Lady(ver polite): Yes, no problem [2min later]
Fax sent, where was it to?
Felix: Germany. [Lady left checked the price and came back]
Lady: East or West?
Felix(skeptical): West...aehhh...East. [Lady left checked the price and came back again]
Lady: That's 95p. West Germany would have been 55p.
Felix: Why is there a difference in price, we got united a couple of years ago...
Lady: I don't know, it's maybe more expensive to send a fax to there, it's on the list like that....

I was kinda shocked that there is a difference between east and west Germany. I reckon that list is quite old, or they slept the last couple of years...

Weekend afternoons

Outdoor activities

Beach

Sports....

Got up to see the sunrise. But it was cloudy (was clear the whole week before.. grml) and we didn't see the sun. But on the way back the sun has fought its way trough the clouds and illuminated that ship. Additonal to that we saw deer on the Don island and a seal in the water..
(and for all that we got up at 6 am....)

Indoor activities

Dressing up - who had that idea?

Creative Painting (the girls painted in the end also over the boys parts, got nicer that way)

A hard week

This was really a hard week, slept at 3 am on average and was out nearly every day. I sometimes also went to the uni...

Thursday

Kef
chilly place with Arabic-style areas with lots of flavoured Russian wodkas. The only thing which I miss in there is a Shisha.

Espionage
..as usually..

Friday

Version I of spending an weekend night in Aberdeen. First you start with a dinner somwhere. Then off to party until the party gets stopped by the higher authorites, then off to the Watering Hole and after 1 am (closure) off to another flat..... after a more or less extensive flapping (flat + hopping) the night usually ends with an late dinner or an early breakfast...

Hillhead

Saturday

Version II of spending an weekend night in Aberdeen. It starts with food and then you stay in one of the flats or in the Watering Hole and take the Bus to the city afterwards. Back by the Bus at 3.20 and then again a small snach in one of the places...

Chinese Food
Got invited for a Chinese-style dinner...

... it was actually quite nice, but the seaweed soup and the prawn salad were quite chinese and reminded me of my fights with the (fishy) sushi in Japan. So I went for mince, rice and soja sauce.....

Espionage
Stuck in the Espionage again. After a while one nows exactly which music comes at which time and in which order, all seems prerecorded although they have somebody who looks like a dj on each floor...
The problem is that this is more or less the only club where the average age is not below 17, which is free and open until 3 am. All other places won't fit in all these requirements. If anyone can suggest a better place, please comment.

Sunday

Sunday-7pm-food Party

Cinema
Saw "The Last Samurai". Tom Cruise is messing around in 19th-century Japan. Quite long and not too bad.

Monday

Scottish Dance
Scottish dance lessons... Funny and exhausting and eventually useful for the Ceilidhs

Liquid
Student night and the place is just packed. Reason :All drinks £ 1
They had the RGU vs. Aberdeen in there. RGU won the city challenge. Boys got "feathered" and the girls had to drink.

Tuesday

Mardi Gras
In France they celebrate Mardi Gras on that Tuesday and I don't know exactly what it is about, but Marie invited us for her irresistible crepes. She spent the whole afternoon and baked 110 crepes, we ate all but 4.

Snowfight
The compulsory Midnight snow fight. Had a snowfight nearly every day, its just so much fun.

Wednesday

Cinema
Went to see Along came Polly. ( Filmstart in D in Maerz) Funny movie, especially Claude with the Frrrrench accent. Had a good laugh.

Bowling
Don't wanna talk about the results...

Estaminet
The Estaminet is just jammed every Wedensday. Reason: Every drink for £ 1.50

Snowfight
It was snowing like hell again and all the streets were covered. So we had snowfights in the midde of the road.

Espionage

Thursday

Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers
We saw Mugenkyo an Eurpean Taiko formation. Was really good and amazing what they could do with just some sticks and drums. And even the small women hit the drum so hard that you could feel the vibration in your chest...

Friday

Ceilidh
Ceilidh (Scottish Dance) in Elphinstone Hall. It was so jammed, that proper dancing wasn't possible, but it was good fun anyway.

Saturday

Glasgow
Went by Bus to Glasgow. It's an sprawling city and its such a difference to our "small" beloved Aberdeen.
That was just a couple of miles behind Aberdeen. As soon as we went further south, the snow got less and less and it was so sunny and nice.

Of what do they all want to take a pic from??

..it's the cathedral of Glasgow.

That's the necroplis of the cathedral. It's so amazing what kind of gravestones those British have....

Espionage
No comment...

Sunday

The weather was so amazing so I went to the beach twice. Walked around, played frisbee, took pics, walked on the golf link, had fun,.....

It's still winter time and spring is pressing, but winter fights back...

..and those little fellows don't mind. They walk around and usually wake me up in the morning with their noise, whatever the weather is like.

Sunset

Sunday-7pm-2£-food-party
It was my turn today and we had a delicious Taco-Fajita-Mexican-Style-Dinner and after that fruit with icecream.

Those Pics were all taken on one day a couple of weeks ago.....

Dusk in the City...

...and the Hillhead-Seaton alley...

...on the golf links...

..and Seaton Park itself...

...and the Don...

..and finally us with the mouth of Don in the background.

2 inches of snow

It has snowed quite a bit this night and it seemed as nothing will work today. All Schools but two are closed in Aberdeenshire.
I don't know why they make such a fuss about that little white stuff. But no one has got winter tyres in here so the cars and the busses are sliding all over the place.

And the weather forecast is not nice, more rain than snow.

Party IV / Valentine's Day

It was Valentine's Day and everybodys Valentine was somewhere else, so it was quite sad. Therefore we went out to the city to have some fun and not to think of the loved ones back home...

..but Mike was the only one who had his girlfriend here.....

First we went to the Hogshead...

...and then to the Espionage where we ended up....

...and found this cheesy heart...

...and continued to party.....

..and arrived safely back home after a good night out only to be welcomed by Jun and to have a late dinner (or a early breakfast) until 4:30 am..

...pancakeparty on the next day.... it is always amazing how many people fit in one kitchen...

Live - con.

The snowstorm has stopped and we have about 1 inch of snow now. Dozens of Chinese went outside as soon as it had stopped to snow. They enjoy it to play in with the "cold white stuff" and build a snowman.

Live

While sitting in the warm computerroom and listening to a glorious 1 half of Leverkusen - Frankfurt (0:1) it is snowing like hell outside.
About 1 1/2 hours ago it was really nice and sunny. Then the weather turned and it got cloudy and dark. And since 30 min we have a heavy snowstorm, one could hardly see anything. I hope the snow will stay for a couple of days....

Snow

We had so much snow for two days last week. Had lots of fun and enjoyed it very much, but now it is too warm again and everything has rained away.

Lisa and me

Konrad defeated the Snowman..

Tried to to perform a headstand. But did not work too good......

We do not have as much ice and snow as Jan in Finland, so we have to "snowskate" in the park, ruuuuun and glide. It also works for some meters and is really good.

We found a shopping trolley and raced down trough our little "canyon", it was amazing and we had lots of fun, nearly crashed a couple of times with the wall......

Haggis

We went to a traditional Burn's Supper, which is celebrated in remembrance of the national poet Robert Burns on his birthday. Some poems have been read out and other traditional ceremonies are done. The most important part is the Haggis, the renowned Scottish dish. If you eat it you should not think of what you actually eat. It sounds and looks discusting, but was much nicer than expected. I kinda liked it.

Haggis is Scotland’s best-known regional dish. It is made from lamb’s offal (lungs, liver and heart) mixed with suet, onions, herbs and spices, all packed into a skin, traditionally made of a sheep’s stomach. Traditionally served on Burns' Night, the haggis is often accompanied by mashed potatoes and mashed turnips.

Chinese New Year

We were invited to join a Chinese New Year dinner. Everything will be prepared together and we put a penny in two dumplings. June was the lucky one and found them both. He will habe a good 2004, according to Chinese tradition.

First we prepared the dumplings (similiar to Maultaschen) altogether....

..and then the other dishes got prepared by the Chinese girls.

Yummie, very tasty. And the Chinese were surprised by our skillfull use of the chopsticks. But since arriving in Hillhead I use chopsticks more often than my set of cutlery. They are so conveniant and easy to use and I got my own set of chopsticks

Christmasdinner

We had a farewell christmas dinner, initiated by our chinese mates. They don't have christmas, but we had a nice reason to cook together.

We found a chicken and stuffed it with garlic and lots of other stuff. ( I would not put anything into a chicken....)

Konrad was "first in command" and conducted the ceremony.....

...while June tried (unsuccessfully) to decorate the table christmaslike, but only managed to set the table in the typical chinese style. Lots of dishes with cheap beer.

The battle started and even I tried that poor chicken a la chinese....

...and we did not only kill the chicken we actually slaughtered it!!!

On mondays the place to go is the KEF. Live Jazz and really cosy seating cornes. It reminds me of a Egyptian style beach bar, the only things wich are missing are a nice shisha (waterpipe) and the beach....

While some are sleeping....

Fireworks - Bonfire

We also had fireworks in here. (Link to Conrad's page) That was around Guy Fawkes Night, nearly a month ago (November 5th). On the day itself was a boring firework show on the beach which stretched over 25 min, but could have been done in 5 min if they breaks between would not have been to long. Anyway, around a week before and after that day on could hear explosions throughout the day. The kids bought their fireworks and played all the time.

Whisky

Went with the marketing class to a whiskey destillerie. Smelly place but quite interesting.

Thats the way whisky looks in one of its preliminary phases. Not very nice, but this stuff tastes better than the actual whiskey later. It tastes like a beer with 70 - 80%.
Whiskey tasting. Smell it, look at it and then taste it. I don't like it too much, it was actually better after one of those guys added some Red Bull.
Cheers!!!!

Viecher

Some kind of corn flour, which is cooked and is similiar to porridge. Then you form balls with your hands and dip these in some other (meat and vegetable)dishes. Different but tasty!!

A la China
Peas and corn with chopsticks. That's a real challenge, but I'm also quite skilfull now and could survive by using only chopsticks.

A la Europe
Tasty spaghetties and all that with cutlery

Flatmates

That are all my flatmates..
We are by far the oldest flat in Hillhead, an average of 30 years.
I'm the youngest and the liveliest in here as you will see later.

That's Osbourne from Malawi, the head of the house.
Mike from China. He is either learning, sleeping or cooking (Poor Mike).
Konrad is also from Jena (Germany), but I never saw him before I came to Aberdeen. By the way, it was 1 am on a Saturday. That's really sad, but I reckon it is better to wash in the night than queue all the day
June, our lawyer. He is always good for a laugh and an excellent cook.
Given, also from Malawi
And that's all of us - eating gorgeous Aldi-Chocolate from Germany. What a delicacy

Another still live - but these are not my cigarettes and not my spider. Lets call them leftovers from Halloween
Thats the height of a sunday times. You would need ages, if there would be something useful inside.... But, I fortunately found just a couple of interesting pages...
Thats Aberdeen during dawn - what you can't see is the big cloud above us, which triggered the sudden rainshower which made us totally wet within 5 min.... After that the weather was nice again - typically Scottish

Schon vier Wochen

Viel Spass, viel Uni, viel teuer, wenig Schlaf, schoene Umgebung, viel unterwegs, viel neues und immer hungrig… So koennte man meine Zeit hier beschreiben.

Wetter

Also, nun muss ich mal was zum Wetter sagen..

1. verfallen lassen --> Ruine --> Touristenattraktion
2. ausbauen --> Fitnessstudio reinbauen (Muckiebude in Ex-Kirche....)
Beispiele:

  • Triple Kirks
A converted church, this has the usual accompaniments of TV screen, quiz night and good service. A quality pub, if a little expensive, it is the downstairs to the Exodus nightclub, which makes the evening much easier.

  • The Hogshead
Optimistic enough to have a beer garden, this is probably Aberdeen's second cheapest pub (after Archie's) and one of the busiest. A converted school (most pubs in Aberdeen are a converted something), it has plenty of seats, fine wines and beers and decent food.

  • Slains Castle
Slains Castle is a converted church situated in the heart of the city centre. Named after Slains Castle in Cruden Bay where Bram Stoker wrote his famous book 'Dracula'. The seven deadly sins cocktails are the highlight of a wide range of drinks all at very reasonable prices. Just make sure you are nice to the ghosts & ghouls lurking in the toilets!

  • The Priory
    Another converted church

    Fotos werden noch nachgeliefert

    Kein Regen

Regenboegen gibts hier ueberall.

    10 quid to London

Habe mir heute Bustickets gekauft, bin da ueber so nen cooles Angebot gestolpert. 10 £ (~15€) fuer ein return Ticket nach London. Also 12 h per Nachtbus hin und 12 Stunden dann wieder per Nachtbus zurueck.

  • 3 for 2
  • one item 59p - two items 1£
  • if buy this then you will get another .. for free
  • choose any soft drink and any sandwich for 2£ and you will get a chocolate bar for FREE.
  • buy 1 get 1 half price
  • bei Handys gibts auch immer was dazu
  • es gibt tausende coupons in den Zeitungen
  • ueberall sind % drauf oder so was wie "2 £ off"
  • ......

    Bus!!

Got nearly knocked down by a bus again, he had to stop and I had to jump. It was driving on the wrong side again......
Before that I had trouble to enter a bus, because you have to have the exact amount of money. They don't give change and you can't pay with notes. So the bus driver was making lots of trouble, he told me to leave, but a friendly (as they all mostly are) Scottish women helped me and so I could finally enter.
Besides that we drive in those famous double-deckers which is nice, but dangerous. You shouldn't even try to walk around on the upper deck or use the stairs. That's really dangerous.

    crazy!!

went jogging at 7:30 am. It was really hard to get up so early. We went trough that amazing park, where someone shouldn't go in the night. (Seaton Park) But it was so beautiful in the morning with perfectly cutted greens, some squirrels and the river just close...
That's also my way to the university.
    Pictures will be posted later....

    Crime

    Aberdeen is so dangerous...
We went to an police information point and that guy told us everything.

    • one of three students will be a crime-related victim
    • Never walk alone, it's dangerous
    • They got a big problem with drug addicts in here
    • Additionally there are a lots of oil-platform workers, so there's a big red light district in here
    • hijacking is quite common in here
    • avoid the parks during the night
    • buy an small alarm gadget
    • mark all your belongings with an UV-pen
    • have always some change with you (so that the guy in front of you will be satisfied and leave
    • .......

    That was impressive...
I just know that from other places:
In St. Petersburg I had always some change, because of all that corrupt policeman
In South Africa hijacking is quite common and that's really dangerous

But I actually reckon that the most criminal thinghere is, that all cars drive on the left side. Got nearly knocked down by an delivery truck today while crossing the road... But I didn't see any car when looking to the left....

    kids&dogs

The people of you who haven't been somewhere in the UK won't believe it: Lot's of parents got their kidds on leashes (Leine), as if they were dogs. That's so incredible...
Maybe we should introduce that in Germany....
